The method

Usable length = stock − 2 × end trim. Pieces per bar = floor((usable length + kerf) ÷ (piece length + kerf)). Stock bars = ceil(required pieces ÷ pieces per bar).

Worked example

With 2,400 mm stock, 450 mm pieces, a 3 mm kerf and 10 mm trim at each end, five pieces fit per bar. Twelve pieces need three bars, with two pieces on the last bar.

How it works

  1. Enter one stock length and the required finished length.
  2. Set kerf, trim for each end and the total pieces wanted.
  3. Read pieces per bar, total bars, and leftover material.

Good questions

Why add kerf to the numerator?+

The final piece can use the exact end of the usable stock without needing another full kerf beyond it.

Does every bar need both end trims?+

Yes. This calculator applies the same per-end trim to every bar it uses. Enter zero when you do not need trim.

Does the last bar contain spare pieces?+

No. The estimate only cuts the number of pieces requested and leaves the rest as an offcut.
